Having water damage in your home or business can lead to something that’s much more serious. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to minimize the damage and some things you should avoid. Here are some tips from your experts in water damage in Eagle River to help when a disaster hits your home.

Remove as Much Water as Possible

When a water-related emergency strikes your home, it’s important to remove as much of the excess water as possible. If the water is deep enough, start filling up buckets with the water and throwing it outdoors. If the water has simply soaked everything and its not standing water, start blotting up the excess moisture with towels, rags and mops. Wipe the water off of the furniture and wring out the towels and rags when they are soaked so you can continue to use them. When possible, use non-colored towels because the colors may bleed into the carpet or furniture when you are wiping up the moisture.

Get Valuables to a Dry Area

If you have valuable paintings, furniture or other things that would be expensive to replace, move them to a dry area as soon as possible. This will allow them to dry without soaking up more water and moisture. The sooner they can begin to dry, the better off they will be.

Avoid Sagging Ceilings

If you are in a room and notice that the ceiling is sagging, move to a different room right away. A sagging ceiling is a sign that there is a lot of water buildup or other type of structural problem above your head. If the structure gives way, it could fall on you and injure you. Take note of what’s around you and if it looks like it could e a dangerous situation, move to another room.

Avoid Using Electrical Appliances

You might be tempted to plug in your Shop Vac or other appliance to help clean up some excess water, but you could cause yourself harm. Using electricity in an area that is flooded or has excess moisture could cause a short circuit or you could even get electrocuted in some instances. If you see appliances that are plugged in and sitting in water, carefully remove the plug and place it away from the water. Otherwise, you could be facing a much more serious problem.

Call for Help Immediately

Once you see that you have a problem, call a company that specializes in water damage in Eagle River. The longer you wait to get professional help, the more damage the water is going to cause.
