One of the hardest things about leaving college is the realization that now, in addition to finding a job, you also have to find apartments for rent. The problem with finding a place to live during this transitional period of your life will be that you probably don’t have much money in your savings account, you need to start paying back your student loans, and unless you’ve landed your dream job, you don’t really know how much money you will be able to spend on rent every single month. 

While you might not be able to qualify for low income housing, you should be able to find apartments for rent that will fit into your budget. There are a few things you can do to make this easier.

If you don’t already have a job, but know where you want to live, you should look into finding a place in  a town that has a high employment rate in the field your qualified. You should be able to rent a place without having to worry about breaking your rent contract, and you might be able to rely on public transportation to get you to and from work, further reducing your bills.

When you’re looking for your first post college apartment, you should plan on having a roommate. Having to only pay half of the rent and utilities will provide you with an enormous amount of financial relief.

Before you start looking at the available apartments for rent, you need to sit down and make a list of your requirements. Can you furnish your own place? Do you need things like a pool and gym? Do you really want to be able to bring your dog or cat with you. Knowing exactly what you need from the apartment will make it easier for to narrow down your search.

When you think you’ve found the perfect place for you, and finally meet with the management, try to negotiate for the shortest possible tenant contract. You’re in a transitional period of your life, you don’t know where you’re going to be in six months, or what you’re going to be doing.  Not being tied to lengthy rental agreement gives you more flexibility and freedom to move to a new place if the perfect job or romantic partner comes along.

The most important thing to remember when you’re looking at places you can live will be making sure the neighborhoods safe. If you’re afraid to leave your home after dark, or the area has a bad reputation you should pass it buy. Paying a little extra for rent in an area where you feel safe and secure will always be a good idea.
