More than a hundred and forty boys in the grade brackets five up to nine are all getting a lot of child-friendly learning in a natural and all the more unique environment; and that also includes an old-fashioned barn and a greenhouse all jam-packed with animals only at the Hillside School Farm. To some extent, the interactive farm became one crucial aspect of the educational system from the time that it was founded in the year 1901. Formerly it was in Greenwich which eventually transferred to its present haven, in Marlborough back in 1927. The integral and mutual relationship of the farm to the school’s curriculum still shines, and it was even strengthened when Jennifer Mitton joined the lineup of staunch farm personnel back in May. Ms. Mitton is a product of UMass-Dartmouth, with a major in biology.
Mitton stated that since she grew up sunning and working in the farm, she considers her presence in such place as the fulfillment of her lifelong ideal job. She also stated that there are so many of those students who opted to attend Hillside all because of their love and passion for the farm. All of these students are eyeing for the remarkably unique perspective of the institution for their mid school learning. All throughout the summer season, Mitton has worked hand in hand with the other personnel both in the garden and greenhouse, which yield to the schools all-natural food service and for enterprise purposes as well. They also have a Mini Farmers Market, that is going to be put up again in 2013; and the fair was always available twice every week for the general public and the whole of the Hillside community.
As the school resumed, Mitton made it a point to collaborate with the Farm Immersion Class Program which has also served as a big scope of the curriculum before. All they are doing now is to revive the program to ensure that more and more people, the children especially, can learn to give value and appreciate the importance, and the joys of farming.
For a couple of hours every day, the students are all asked to get on with their favorite sports activities, or the Eco Team for instance, which is also a healthy alternative for those who opt for combined outdoor leisure with farming and agri-business. This coming spring, the farm will then be introducing the so-called Community Gardeners Program. It is an annual membership program which is inclusive of a 12ft to 12ft plot, plus an all-natural and safe environment for farm-fresh produce. The Farm Store is now open regularly to the public on weekdays from 9 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon, or you can visit them by appointment as well. Enjoy the farm fresh produce that includes all the healthy vegetables and crops like carrots, okra, Brussels sprouts, basil, peppers, sage, and potatoes. Eggs are also sold all throughout the year so make sure to pay a visit to the school farm.
