E911 service, otherwise known as enhanced 911, is a category of telecommunications that is meant to link different people together by using an immediate and emergency public resource. It was first used in the United Kingdom and it has spread continuously throughout the world. It includes some very simple dial codes, as well as codes that apply outside of North America.

Within North America, 911 is an easy access code that will direct you to an emergency location for solutions to your problems. Often, an e911 service is in a physical location that can release emergency cops, paramedics and fire safety teams, and it reduces the amount of time it takes to resolve hazardous problems. This is considered a public safety point of contact, and all calls directed toward this department are recorded and solved within a short amount of time.

Calls made to an e911 service are routed based on the caller and his or her destination. When the call is processed, a trained receiver (also known as a telecommunicator) answers the phone. This is also the dispatcher of public safety resources, and when a call is taken, a location display informs them where the caller is so that they can send immediate help after the call is completed.

This system is only in full force in North America. Although it is technically referred to as e911, it is often simply called 911. Some phones may not complete these types of emergency calls if they are part of an outside system, since emergency phone calls are not permitted under those conditions. In other areas, it is referred to a facility called a caller location, which successfully processes the emergency phone call using a different procedure. In different areas, there are various telephone networking emergency phone calls processed for the convenience and safety of the community.

The destination where the e911 service is answered is known as the public safety answering point. There may be different points contacted within one exchange, and dispatch arrangements are made when it is time for the emergency services to attend to the designated location. The Computer Assisted Dispatch system, or CAD, provides the literal text display of the address and the emergency response.

The first e911 service was established in 1992. It displayed the caller’s position and the nearest responders, as well as other material that needed to be marked down for future reference.
