Not every hone needs a fence and in fact there’s something to be said for leaving your property unfenced so that you have a more open feel with the neighborhood. However there are circumstances that will send someone down to the fence supply company to start building up. It’s not necessarily that you want to keep the neighbors away, though; there are times that it is a legitimate issue. Most of the time, a fence is actually to keep things in the yard, instead of keeping people out. Of course there are times when you’re going to want to keep your neighbor’s dog out of the yard, or make the place less attractive to people go door to door with pamphlets, but quite often people run to the fence supply store to keep things in.
If you have a dog one of the worst things that can happen is having the dog escape. The dog can get hurt or lost in the world and some breeders specifically require owners to have fenced in yards. There are other options, but ultimately none of them work as well as fencing in a yard. In a crowded suburban area this trend is just as true as out in the countryside. In both cases keeping your dog chained or on an invisible fence won’t protect it from outsiders. There’s also the fact that both can fail rather easily. Invisible fencing can be spotty with certain larger breeds of dogs. Serious hunting breeds are bred to ignore pain and distraction when on a scent, so if they spot something that really draws their interest they might run right through the invisible fencing. A chain can be pulled right off of its anchor as well allowing the dog free.
The other thing people want to be able to keep in is their children. Some believe that many parents are overly protective of their children, and there are elements of truth to that argument, on the other hand if you have a very young child and live near a particularly busy road having a fence can prevent a simple mental lapse from resulting in tragedy when you ran inside to get the phone. With pets and children vigilance is important, but having made a run to the fence supply store and built a proper fence can help as well. Finally, there is something to be said for the benefits of keeping the political and religious door knockers away. Just because you went to a fence supply company doesn’t mean you hate your neighbors, most often it just means you want to protect something you care about from getting itself into trouble.
